Megan Paetz
Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club

(L-R) Karen Paetz, Meqan Paetz, Richard Paetz, Rotarians Ray MacFarlane and Van Mobley
The Thiensville-Mequon (T-M) Rotary Club, which will be celebrating its 70th Anniversary this year, chose to honor Megan Paetz as its March 2007 “Student of the Month”. As most of you know, pictures of this event are published in the next issue of the newsletter, which in most cases, is after the event has taken place. This Homestead High School (HHS) senior was selected to receive this prestigious award, by the Vocational Services Committee, under the direction of Mr. Todd M. Davis, T-M Rotary Club’s Director and Chair of its Vocational Service Committee. A framed Rotary ‘Certificate of Recognition’, was presented to Megan along with flowers, to the daughter of Ms. Karen Paetz of Grafton and Mr. Richard Paetz of Milwaukee.

This presentation took place on March 20, 2007 at the T-M Rotary Luncheon Meeting held at the Ozaukee Country Club, 10823 N. River Road, 43N, Mequon, Wisconsin 53092. In addition to the many hours of service she has rendered the community while in the employ of Rotarian Ted Hagen, Megan has walked for the past four years in the Annual MS Walk/Bike Tour; has served as a tutor for students at the Forest Home Elementary School in Milwaukee and has spent four days in Mexico building houses as a member of a ‘Crossroads Mission Trip’. She spends her summers at the Ozaukee Summer Camp Recreational Program where she does one-on-one counseling. When not engaged in a variety of AP, honors and business-related courses, she manages to juggle her school time between the orchestra, the year book committee, the Student Council and various duties as vice president of ‘Best Buddies’. She is also one of the caretakers of a 15 year-old cognitively disabled sister who attends HHS. For all of this and so much more, the T-M Rotary Club is proud to have Megan Paetz as its “Student of the Month” for March 2007. Good Luck, Megan, in whatever lies ahead!

Sonia Jain
Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club

The Thiensville-Mequon (T-M) Rotary Club, through its Vocational Service Committee, selected Homestead High School graduating senior, Sonia Jain, as its ‘February 2007 Student of the Month’. This prestigious award, a framed Rotary ‘Certificate of Recognition’, was presented to Sonia, the daughter of Jyoti and Hermant Jain of Mequon by Rotarian Todd Davis, the Director of Vocational Service and chair of the Vocational Service Committee. The presentation took place on February 20, 2007 at the T-M Rotary Luncheon Meeting held in the ‘Curling Club’ of the Ozaukee Country Club at 10823 N. River Road, 43N, Mequon, Wisconsin 53092. In addition to her many hours of community service, Sonia choreographed dances for the ‘Asian Moon Festival’ and has also served as a ‘Mistress of Ceremonies’ at the Jain Religious Center. An avid believer in helping our ‘senior population’, Sonia also serves as one of Milwaukee’s Alzheimer volunteers. Please join us in congratulating this soft spoken and gracious young woman as T-M Rotary’s “Student of the Month”.

Student of the Month - January 2007
Rachel Biblo
Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club

(L-R) Rachel Biblo, T-M Rotarian Stephen Rayl

The Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club selected Rachel Biblo, senior at Homestead High School, as its January 2007 "Student of the Month". A framed Rotary 'Award of Recognition' was presented to Rachel by Stephen Rayl, of the Vocational Service Committee, on January 23, 2007 at a luncheon meeting held at the Ozaukee Country Club, 10823 N. River Road, 43N, Mequon, Wisconsin.

The T-M Rotary Club now in its third school year of this program, initiated this ‘recognition’ in December of 2004 as a project of the club’s Vocational Avenue of Service. With the month of January being celebrated as Rotary’s ‘Awareness Month’. T-M Rotary Club is especially proud to honor Rachel Biblo, the daughter of Lee Biblo and Ileen Gilbert.

For eight months during the school year, the T-M Rotary Club, through Todd M. Davis, its Director for Vocational Service, seeks to honor a junior or senior student at Homestead High School (HHS) for the service and volunteerism rendered by that student to his/her school district, church or community. Rachel has done just that and so much more. Since entering HHS in the ninth grade, Rachel has consistently been on the ‘high’ honor roll and in her senior year has taken a 3-credit course at UWM in ‘Contemporary Non-Fiction Media’ as part of UWM’s Milwaukee Youth Options Program. As if that was not enough, Rachel was elected to the Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists while still finding time to serve as a ‘Volunteer Instructor for Tot and Youth Gymnastics Classes at LaFleur’s Academy of Gymnastics’ and as a ‘Volunteer at the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Obstructive Lung Diseases Program’.

Thank you, Rachel, for being Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club's “Student of the Month” for January 2007.

Student of the Month - May 2006
Teddy P. Thompson
Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club

(L-R) Paul & June Thompson, T-M Rotarian Greg Sommersberger, Teddy Thompson, T-M Rotarian Doug Hansen

Greg Sommersberger, of the Thiensville-Mequon (T-M) Rotary Club, announces the selection today of Homestead High School senior, Teddy P. Thompson, as the T-M Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month” for May, 2006. Although Teddy's selection signals the end of this year’s awards, the T-M Vocational Services Committee, under the direction of Patricia E. Treffert, hopes to continue its ‘Student of the Month’ program next year (2006-07).

Believing in living the Rotary motto, ‘Service Above Self’, Teddy Thompson enjoys volunteering for various activities including Gathering on the Green, the Tartan Ball and most recently spent a week aiding the many victims of Hurricane Katrina. A member of HHS’s Honor Society and on the high honor roll for all four years, Teddy is also in the HHS orchestra where he plays the viola. He has tutored several fourth graders, has coached youth basketball, and has participated in basketball, baseball and ultimate frisbee. Teddy volunteers for and participates in most, if not all, of the youth activities at Alliance Bible Church where he has attended all of his life. He has been honored at ceremonies recently held at Shully’s by the Thiensville Business Association (TBA) where he won a highly coveted scholarship. In besting several of his peers, he wrote an essay in which he identified his love of community and that of his fellow man and woman. The T-M Rotary Club is pleased to have Teddy P. Thompson as one of its many school-community ‘ambassadors’ and wishes him well in all of his future endeavors!

The Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club presented Teddy with a framed ‘Certificate of Recognition’ at its Luncheon Meeting on May 9, 2006 at the Ozaukee Country Club.

Student of the Month - April 2006
Lura Anyanwu
Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club

(L-R) Lura Anyanwu and Rotarian Steve Rayl

Steve Rayl, of the Thiensville-Mequon (T-M) Rotary Club, chartered in 1937, announces the selection today of Homestead High School senior, Lura Anyanwu as the T-M Rotary Club’s “Student of the Month” for April 2006. The T-M Rotary Club is rounding out its second year of operation of this program it initiated in December of 2004. Each month this Committee seeks to honor a junior or senior student at Homestead High School for the service and volunteerism rendered by that student to his/her school, church or community. Looking at Lura’s many accomplishments, one has to wonder how any student can find the time to do all of these things. Lura, in short, is just such a student.

The daughter of proud parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anyanwu find Lura is no stranger to accomplishment. She has distinguished herself in many school activities, some of which include: co-presidency of S.A.V.E. (student Action Group); second vice president of ‘Top Teens of America’ (the local branch); treasurer of ‘Jack & Jill of America’s Youth Investment Club’ and regional parliamentarian of the ‘National Sorority of Jack & Jill of America, Inc.’. In addition, she is or has been active in:
Girl Scout’s of America, Club United, HHS Orchestra where she plays violin and flute, gymnastics, tennis, soccer, dance, making of jewelry, a ‘Juneteenth celebrant, a debutante, a member of Milwaukee and Cedarburg (Ozaukee County) NAACP youth councils and a devoted member of St. Mark’s Church where she sings in the youth choir. As anyone can see, this multi-tasking young woman has learned how to juggle a solid academic program of study with a multitude of charitable events and worthwhile causes. Her high level of energy also permits her to attend Northwestern University during the summers. Lura must be a master at time-management and organizational skills to have done all of this; she is a ‘force’ with whom to be reckoned. T-M Rotary proudly welcomes Lura to its long list of honorees.

The Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club presented Lura with a framed ‘Certificate of Recognition’ at its Luncheon Meeting on April 18, 2006 at the Ozaukee Country Club.

Student of the Month - March 2006
Erin E. Winnemann
Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club

(L-R) Rotarian Chuck Winnemann, Chris Winnemann, Erin Winnemann, and Rotarian Ray MacFarlane

Ray MacFarlane, of the Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club, chartered in 1937, proudly announces the selection of Erin E. Winnemann, graduating senior at Homestead High School as its Rotary “Student of the Month” for March 2006. The club initiated this program in December of 2004. Now in its second year, the program continues to honor a junior or senior student at Homestead High School who meets high standards for service and volunteerism to her/his school, community or church. Erin E. Winnemann, the daughter of Chris and Chuck Winnemann, has met and continues to meet those standards on a daily basis, both as a person and student at Homestead High School.

This happy, smiling and always cheerful young woman is one of Homestead High School’s best kept secrets. Like many students, she could have fallen between the cracks in the hallowed halls of academia were it not for her interest in helping special needs children.  For the past three summers, she has dedicated her time at an Ozaukee County Recreational Day Camp for ‘Special Needs Kids’ by being a counselor, a mentor and (by her own admission) just a “buddy” to mentally or physically-disabled children.  She is a tutor in Math at the middle school level and a member of Homestead’s many orchestras, singing in the ‘Treble Clefs’ and the ‘Chorale’. She has spent five years as a volunteer for the T-M Rotary Black-Tie Fundraisers and currently finds working at ‘Bed, Bath and Beyond’ one way to save toward pursuing a career as a Special Education Teacher at Edgewood College near Madison, Wisconsin. Erin E. Winnemann is, indeed, a T-M Rotary Club role model.

The Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club presented Erin with a framed ‘Certificate of Recognition’ at its Luncheon Meeting on March 14, 2006 at the Ozaukee Country Club.

Barbara Hunt of the Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club, chartered in 1937, announces the selection of Jacqueline Sperling, as its “Student of the Month” for February 2006. Sperling is the second Homestead High School senior to be cited by the T-M Rotary Club in 2006. The ‘Student of the Month’ program started in December of 2004 under the direction of Mrs. Patricia E. Treffert, Chair of the T-M Rotary Club’s Vocational Services Committee. This Committee seeks to honor a Homestead High School junior or senior student each month of the school year who has demonstrated exemplary service and volunteerism to her/his school district, church or community. The T-M Rotary Club is therefore pleased to honor the daughter of Peggy and Michael Sperling as its “Student of the Month” for February 2006.

Jacqueline is a state-ranked member of the Homestead Varsity Tennis Team. She manages to balance her tutoring, giving lessons in Hebrew, piano and violin with being a member of the school yearbook committee, a member of STAND (a political action group), a member of the school orchestra and an honor student.   She has also been an active volunteer at St. Ben’s Food Pantry, Kiddie Kamp (for the past 3 summers), taught Hebrew at Temple Shalom, worked in presidential campaigns, participated on an annual basis in Mitzvah Day and received a number of other honors, achievements and awards of which the ‘President’s Education Awards Program for Outstanding Academic Excellence’ was one.

Jacqueline was awarded a framed ‘Certificate of Recognition’ at the T-M Rotary Luncheon Meeting held on February 14, 2006 at the Ozaukee Country Club.

Student of the Month - January 2006
Andrew R. Suhr
Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club

(L-R) Family friend, Jill Suhr, Superintendent of Schools Robert Slotterback, Andrew Suhr, Robert Suhr, and Rotarian Stephen Rayl

Stephen Rayl of the Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club, chartered in 1937, announces the selection of Andrew R. Suhr, senior at Homestead High School as its “Student of the Month” for January 2006. The T-M Rotary Club started this program in 2004 under the direction of Mrs. Patricia E. Treffert, Chair of T-M Rotary’s Vocational Services Committee. Each month, the Vocational Services Committee seeks to honor a junior or senior student at Homestead High School for the service and volunteerism rendered by that student to her/his school district, church or community. The son of Jill and Robert Suhr has done just that and more.

For the past four years, Andrew has been busy in HHS Track and Field, Volleyball and Intramural Basketball, but he’s done all this while being involved in Forensics, Debates, “U-Turn” youth group ministry and in serving as an Audio/Visual Engineer for his church. He has also served, for the past two years, as a member of the Milwaukee Men’s Junior Rowing Team and a member of the HHS ‘SAVE’ Group (Students Actively Volunteering Everywhere). Over the past two years, Andrew has also received the HHS Merit Award, has attained membership in the National Honor Society, received the Advanced Placement Scholar Award and an award for being a Wisconsin American Legion Oratorical Contest Regional Finalist. He has been an American Legion Badger Boys State participant and a member of the International Quill and Scroll Society of High School Journalists. Andrew has even had summer jobs as a custodian at his church and at ‘Missing Links Golf Course’ in Mequon.

Student of the Month - December 2005
Ashley Winograd
Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club

(L-R) David, Wendy & Ashley Winograd, Rotarian Steve Rayl

Stephen Rayl of the Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club, chartered in 1937, announces the selection of Ashley Winograd, senior at Homestead High School as its "Student of the Month" for December 2005. The T-M Rotary Club started this program in December of 2004 under the direction of Mrs. Patricia E. Treffert, Chair of the Vocational Services Committee. Each month, the Vocational Services Committee seeks to honor a junior or senior student at Homestead High School for the service and volunteerism rendered by that student to her/his school district, church or community. The daughter of Wendy and David Winograd is no stranger to all of this and more.

It's quite a coincidence that Ashley should serve as T-M Rotary Club's December 2005 "Student of the Month" when Jeanette Anderson was the T-M Rotary Club's first "Student of the Month" in December of 2004. For both of them to serve as members of Homestead's Chamber Orchestra says a great deal about the value of having a Homestead High School Fine Arts experience. Serving since 2002 on the staff of the Tartan Yearbook, Ashley now serves as its senior editor. In addition, she has found the time to be an active participant of Club United, the North Shore Dance Company, the Homestead Varsity Dance Team, the Homestead String and Chamber Orchestras and the National Honor Society while tutoring children in Spanish, in violin and in various homework assignments.

Ashley was awarded a framed "Certificate of Recognition" at the T-M Rotary Club's Luncheon Meeting held on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at the Ozaukee Country Club, 10823 N. River Road43N, Mequon, WI 53092.

Treffert, Chair of the T-M Rotary Vocational Services Committee.  This program, now in its second year, seeks to honor a junior or senior student at Homestead High School each month for the service and volunteerism that student has rendered to his/her school district, community or church. William M. Miller, the son of Sally and David Miller, despite a demanding schedule, has done all of this and more as Rotary International celebrates November as “Rotary Foundation Month”.

Having taken scouting to its highest level in his junior year, Bill, as he is called by peer and faculty alike, has distinguished himself by receiving the exemplary status of Eagle Scout -Troop 352, for his many hours of countless service to his community. Bill has participated all four years as a passionate member of the Homestead Swim Team and as a valued member of the Schroeder YMCA Swim Team, improved the riverside trail at Riveredge Nature Center, served as a ‘tripping assistant’ at the YMCA’s Camp Manito-wish and has been involved in service as a ‘volunteer’ at Fox Point church where he is a member. He has accepted all these tasks and more while accepting the challenge of honors level and AP classes. He is well rounded, active and involved and yet is humble about his many accomplishments. In short, like so many of his predecessors, his outstanding academic motivation and inspirational work regimen may readily identify Bill. A credit to his school, church and community, Bill will make an excellent college student who values ‘service above self’, a Rotary motto.

Bill was awarded a framed ‘Certificate of Recognition’ at the T-M Rotary Club’s Luncheon Meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at the Ozaukee Country Club at 10823 N. River Road-43N, in Mequon, WI 53092.
