President's Message

 The significance of September 11th is not lost on me as I pen this message today.  The internet is filled with images and videos of that fateful day.  Some of us knew people who lost their lives that day or had relatives who lost their lives.  America was forever changed.  
 
We will never forget where we were and what we were doing that morning when we heard the news.  Ray and I were at our kitchen table, and Phil, our German Rotary son, was upstairs.  He was concluding a return visit the year after he was part of our family.  We quickly called him downstairs, and together we watched as the news unfolded.  Phil was supposed to leave the next day.  Needless to say, that did not happen.  
 
What have we learned in the aftermath?  For a while, Americans seemed to pull together, reaching out to help those who lost family and friends.  Rotary was there, too, during the days after the twin towers came down.  Not the big institution from Illinois, but every day Rotarians  who lived and worked in New York City.  People like you can me who knew they had to help in some way. 
 
We never know what a new day has in store.  Let us live each day to the fullest, do all the good we can each day, and never miss a chance to let those dearest to us know of our love for them.

Polio Plus Needs Our Help
We heard at our last meeting that polio has raised its ugly head once again in Nigeria after two years with no new cases.  Rotary sprang into action, but these new cases are but the tip of the iceberg.  This new outbreak is a harsh reminder that we can never stop fighting this nefarious virus.  If you can write a check, now is a good time.   Holly Bern is looking for your checks made out to "Rotary Foundation" at the meeting this Tuesday.  Write Polio Plus in the memo line.  Give as much as you can to help protect the world's children.
 
 

Charity Navigator Upgrades Rotary Foundation's Rating
The Rotary Foundation has received the highest possible score from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.
 
In the most recent ratings, released on 1 September, The Rotary Foundation earned the maximum 100 points for both financial health and accountability and transparency.
 
The ratings reflect how efficiently Charity Navigator believes the Foundation will use donations, how well it has sustained programs and services, and its level of commitment to good governance and openness.
 
In the previous rating, the Foundation had received 97 points.

What Do SEO, Retargeting, and Conversion Marketing Have in Common?
Tim Vertz Explained Everything Last Week
Our own Tim Vertz explained the best practices of digital advertising, including search engine organic (SEO), retargeting, and conversion marketing, to name just a few.  Most people go online, probably to Google or some other search engine when they have a question.  Does it surprise you to know that adults spend 25 hours per month online?  
 
Advertisers know that and want to get your attention.  Advertising is all about repetition and brand recognition (retargeting), so they want to get their ads in places where people spend the most time.  You know those little ads that pop up when you are online?  Tim explained that is not a random action.  Websites use a competitive bidding process for the top four spots on their sites.  Advertisers pay to have their ads pop up at various times, a form of advertising called "pay per click."  They pay every time someone clicks on their ad.  PPCs can cost anywhere from one penny to over one hundred dollars for PPCs.  The award for most expensive ads online goes to personal injury attorneys.  You will have to ask someone at the meeting what that amount is.  Ask Tim about conversion marking the next time you see him.

Rotary members, their families and friends can support Rotary’s work by bidding on antiques, artwork, jewelry, and collectibles through eBay Live Auctions events.  Each month, Rotary will promote on its social media outlets a set of upcoming Live Auctions events, and eBay, the world’s largest auction website, will donate a portion of all sale proceeds from those events to Rotary.
 
Live Auctions events enable buyers to participate in auctions across the United States — held at such auction houses as Sotheby’s, Swann, and Freeman’s — without leaving home. Under this proceeds-sharing agreement, only U.S. auction sales are eligible.
