MATC Promise: Mequon Campus Outreach

Dr. Vicki J. Martin was named the 10th president of Milwaukee Area Technical College by the MATC District Board on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. Dr. Martin has served MATC since 1988 and most recently was the college's Executive Vice President and Provost since March 2010. In September, she introduced the MATC Promise, a program that will provide eligible students with tuition and fees and is funded entirely through private donations. |

Twenty-five years ago our club forever changed the landscape of the community with the initiation of Rotary Park. Join with fellow Rotarians to view the Kids from Wisconsin at 5:30 p.m. and the Starliner Big Band featuring Jenny Thiel at 7:45 p.m., with musical fireworks to follow. Enjoy pulled pork, turkey with gravy, assorted rolls, fruit, veggies, slaw, chips, assorted cookies, and beverages, not to mention great conversation with fellow Rotarians. Cost is $25 and includes food, beverages, general admission to the event, and parking. What a deal!

I Walked 444-Miles to Make a Memory

New York Times best selling author Andra Watkins wrote the memoir Not Without My Father: One Woman’s 444-Mile Walk of the Natchez Trace, the novel To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis, and the photography collection Natchez Trace: Tracks in Time, published by Word Hermit Press. The Huffington Post called Not Without My Father “one literary ride you don’t want to miss!” Read the review HERE. It was nominated for the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction, the Sarton Memoir Award, and the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award for Autobiographies and Memoirs. To launch her debut novel, Andra is one of the only living persons to walk the 444-mile Natchez Trace as the pioneers did. Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN. Fifteen miles a day. Six days a week. She finished her trek in 34 days. While she walked the Trace to launch her novel, she ended up having a life-changing adventure with her 80-year-old father. Not Without My Father chronicles that experience. Andra is a Past President of the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is past District Communications Chair for District 7770-Eastern South Carolina, founder of the District 7770 Friendship Exchange program, a two-time Rotarian of the Year, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a Paul Harris Society member, and recipient of her District’s Distinguished Service Award. Representative David Bowen-10th Assembly District Rep. Bowen was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2014. He is honored to serve the people of Milwaukee and Shorewood and represent our shared values and priorities. He serves on the Assembly’s Committees on Corrections, Small Business Development, Transportation, and Workforce Development. A first generation American and the son a Jamaican immigrants Rep. David Bowen was born and raised on Milwaukee’s North Side. David attended Milwaukee Public Schools and was an honors graduate of Bradley Tech High School and went on to study Education Policy and Community Studies at UW-Milwaukee. Before being elected to the Assembly Rep. Bowen served on the Milwaukee County Board as Supervisor for the 10th District, becoming the youngest member of the Board and one of the youngest Black elected officials in Milwaukee’s history. David served on several County Board committees including Finance & Personnel, Health & Human Needs and Economic & Community Development as Vice‐Chair. He is a former Program Director for Urban Underground’s youth leadership program, a National AmeriCorps Service Alum, a two-time graduate of the AmeriCorps program Public Allies, and a Legacy Foundation Youth Activism Fellow. A nationally recognized trainer for intergenerational community improvement strategies, Rep. Bowen served on the Steering Committee of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Violence Prevention Initiative and the City of Milwaukee’s Homicide Review Commission. |
